I agree. No device that I know of can afford you the accuracy of a good
drift alignment. In spite of this, there IS a purpose for an alignment tool
such as the Tuthill.
First of all there is the time factor. The Tuthill scope gets you very
close in less than 2 minutes...how much time will you burn with a good drift
alignment?
Second. While a Tuthill alignment is almost useless for long duration film
photography, it serves very will for many imaging tasks. As the CCD camera
allows the user the option of stacking images, drift alignment in this case
is overkill.
I believe that these polar alignment devices are wonderful time savers.
They could, however, get you into trouble if you expect too much from them.
