While you're here, how about checking out the
Astronomy Book

I might as well throw in my 2cents worth. Ours has never worked right as
far as slewing is concerned (up to 30arcmin off in DEC on medium length
slew) but I would assume part of your problem is the altaz mounting. When
it starts up out of park and does the home search, I assume it looks for
its "zero position", basically 0 Dec, 0 Hour Angle. If its in altaz it
would have to "correct" this to its altaz park position. You could almost
consider polar alignment a 1 star alignment by default (90 dec, *RA),
since the scope always knows where the pole is, it just has to be told
what its current RA is through the hardware. Now add in the home search
(0 DEC, Siderialtime RA), and you now have your 2 "stars", granted both of
the stars are ficticious.
I would like to test this out myself, but since our 16" is getting
repaired for the 2nd time in 2 years for the same pointing problem and
the homing function failing, I can't.
