Guys/Gals,

While not an ETX owner, I have purchased many accessory/carrying cases for
my photography gear, my LX200, eyepieces, etc. While not the cheapest,
Pelican makes what are, in my ever so humble opinion, one of the most
durable and rugged cases out there. Most of the suppliers like JMI, Meade,
etc. purchase their cases from Pelican or Doskocil and insert their label.
I have found that you can purchase a large Pelican or Doskocil case at a
good photography supplier for a fair amount less than you can get from the
astro suppliers. The down side is that the cube foam inserts need to be
cut/molded to the gear. The JMI cases are supplied with form fitted
inserts. I have used the cube foam for all my gear with no problem. I feel
that the added expense for a good hard case more than justifies itself when
shipping it on an airline or even just driving down the bumpy road to my
observing site. Id never forgive myself if I ended up with
dents/dings/scratches that a simple thing like a good case would have
prevented.

TLN,
The alternative cases/coolers for transporting the ETX etc scopes are not
airpline compatible...the one I suggested is for road use...we use a JMI
case for air transport...NONE of the cases I have seen would survive the
baggage handlers I have seen...the case goes on board and fits in the
overhead. Also, US airlines supposedly max out overhead storage dimensions
at 9" x 22" x 14"...the JMI case is just outside of legal, but will fit
through the United Airlines security template.
