While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Hello,

My four year old 8" LX 200 went on a DEC runaway at startup last Friday
evening. I down loaded everything I could find on the topic from the
Archives and tried them out. Since I'm not an electrical engineer this
consisted of visually inspecting connections, swapping the ends of the
DEC cable, and so forth. I couldn't find anything wrong visually and
nothing else worked.

When I spoke to a Meade customer service agent today, his initial
suggestion was that the AC convertor failed and was not putting out
enough AMPS or voltage and that this could be a cause. Tomorrow I will
try to find a TV repair shop that can measure this.

The reason I am posting this is that I did not read this as a possible
cause previously cited in the Archives and wondered if anyone else had
the same problem. The representative said the standard convertors have
a life span of 3-5 years and that using them outside is very hard on
them.

On another issue, I have heard a rattling inside the hand paddle for a
while and so finally took it apart to see what it was. A tiny hex nut
fell out. I couldn't see where it went or what it was attached to.
Does this really matter? Could this be related to the DEC runaway?

Any suggestions or observations would be appreciated. I hope I don't
have to send the scope back to Meade.

Thanks in advance.

Michael Payne
