While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

It really sounds like a focus problem. Are you seeing any faint rings at all?
You might want to try photographing the moon or planets. That way you can
easily see what you are imaging and what you are getting as a final product.
If you are using a flip mirror..make sure the mirror is out of the way! It's
easy to miss easy stuff like this in the dark!
