While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

This particular message indicates that the serial port ON YOUR COMPUTER is in
use by some other prog. or (much less likely) broken in some way). Look for
programs like AOL, clock tweakers that dial periodically, FAX software that is
ready to receive from a modem attached to that port, etc. Stop everything you
think might have a use for the serial port. Keep trying till your prog caan
open the serial port. Once it does, THEN and only then are you in the domain
of testing wires.
