While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Hi all,

I'm wondering what probable causes there could be for an LX200 (in this
case a 16") to enter fast slew mode, of its own volition, on both axes
simultaneously. In the process, the scope power supply was burnt out,
sacrificing itself to save a 10 cent fuse.

The scope in question is permanently mounted (alt-azimuth), and was being
parked at the time. The operator (not myself), being a rather neat and
precise sort of guy, was trying to point it exactly at 90º altitude.

General consensus at the time (I don't know exactly as it is not my scope,
and I wasn't present when this happened) was that the parking somehow
contributed to the telescope's decision to attempt suicide.

I know from when I was previously subscribed to this list that others have
experienced similar problems, but I have been unable to search the archive
because the search engine was cactus when I went there.

Cheers,
Bevan Harris
