While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

I wish to thank all who responded to my query regarding noise problems
with my LX-200 RA drive. There was a tapping which appeared to come from
the gear box.

One of the suggested fixes worked and worked well.

It was suggested that the gear lubricant had probably become sticky
and/or displaced to the ends of the worm and as a result the hinged
flange was periodically and minutely decending as the gear rotated and
became "stuck". When the spring pulled the worm back in line a little
periodic tap of the gearbox against the rear plate occurred. This was
what I found happening, although the motion is so small you can not see
it unless you use magnification. (I used a head-piece magnifying lens).

After removing the gearbox and relubricating the worm gear ( I did this
on the DEC drive) the tapping not only disappeared but the entire
mechanism quieted.

Thanks:

Evan Garber
