While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

In a message dated 98-04-09 20:38:43 EDT, you write:

I believe that the "DEC training" being referred to is the ability to have the
DEC slowly change, as would be necessary for possibly tracking a fast moving
comet. I'm pretty sure I read about that feature somewhere in my LX200
manual, but I just don't recall where. Never used it myself, but it rings a
bell.

I don't understand how DEC training could work. The movement in DEC with a
polar aligned scope is mostly due to polar alignment error (atmospheric
refraction being the only other source I can think of). I don't think this
error is repeatable except perhaps if you are pointing at the exact same
Declination in the sky. This means that it would be useful only if the
telescope was pointed at the same declination as when it was trained. Doesn't
seem like a very useful thing to me. If I get much DEC drift, I refine my
polar alignment until the DEC drift is within tolerance for astrophotography.
No need to train anything in Declination. >>
