This issue has gone on for so long, it must, for good reason be of concern. I
suggest the following procedure for turning on and off the LX200. When turning
off the LX200, pull the plug on the power without turning off the off switch.
After a few seconds the scope will be really dead electrically. Then turn off
the off switch.
When turning the scope on. plug in the power and then turn the switch on. The
scope will power up normlly.
The problem is that if the capacitor were placed after the seitch instead of
before it, the switch would hve to take the current surge from the battery to
the capacitor. As it is, the plug takes the surge. The plug is more sturdy
than the switch and so can take it.
Alternately, you can keep the switch on all the time and simply plug and un plug
the power.
Then there will never be a problem as long as you connect everything befor you
plug in the power.
