After the successful installation of a new set of RA and DEC wormgear in Eric Ayres' LX-200, I decided to investigate the bad DEC backlash or retrograde motion, I could not get rid of on my 10" LX-200, I suspected it was in fact lag, due to a mis-aligned worm drive.
Intending to follow the process from the recent install and also information from Doc G, I took the cover off my DEC drive and replacing the locking knob, started to look at clearance and position of worm drive. Everything looked pretty good, so I grabbed the handle on the back of the OTA to see if there was any movement. I pushed down and was surprised to see the whole worm drive assembly move. I looked closer and pushed again, the two hex headed screws appeared loose.
I tried tightening the screews, with no change, so I removed the screws, added a lock-nut and tightened them down again.
I then tested by pushing the OTA again, no movement.
I powered up the scope and lined up a star in my eyepiece, used the keypad in guide mode to move North and then South, It was fixed ! no retrograde motion.
Cheers !!
