I have not read every post on the new scopes but if someone has got some
good info would like to know? Do to the high winds last week that did
major damage to my dome, I'm proceeding to purchase the AstroDomes dome,
2.9 meter one. It would be nice if others in the western area of the
states had a order in as well that way shipping cost from down under
would be cheaper. But do to the needs of a good commercial dome, I
going to cut into my budget for a new OTA. I have had my pier set up
with an adapter for a 16" Meade, but with the new Aim controls fork unit
and computer, that part is set now its OTA time. I have looked at some
professional made OTA's that are carbon fiber like the 300 I understand
will be. But, like the R.C. 14.5 that is carbon fiber, the actual
diameter is 16.5" as they have truss tubes inside to stop any tube flex.
I think I can understand 0 expansion, but carbon fiber is supposed to
flex some, this I know from some military pilot friends. So will the 300
have these tubes say in the LX300-12"? I have to know all the exact data
as Aim must make the forks and the boss that the forks mount to and thus
to the RA shaft. I may have to go to the Meade OTA as it would be
cheaper than a R.C. and I just don't trust the celestron 14" at all
anymore. The last Meade I played with had, I think, just a bit better
optics than the Celestron did, but required more mirror flop fix's than
one would expect, but there have been several ways around that, so that
makes it a good choice. Even a 16" would now be cheaper than the R.C. 16
or 18, and that's the limit for the dome unless i go to the 4.5 meter,
and that's a no no for me as then I would need a building permit. I'm
staying within the 10 foot law! But over all the tube flex is what
worries me, when a large load as I have on the OTA caused tube flex more
that I ever thought on the C11, but was fix able as I discovered. So if
there are any thoughts on this I'm at the point as time if getting close
to the purchase day. End of march to First part of April. Mike
