This appears to be a common problem. Several people have tried different
things including making their own cables out of cat-5/RJ45 wiring and
connectors, thus eliminating the coil cord which catches on the bottom of
the fork arms. There is info on how to do this in the mapug archives I
believe. What I do is hold onto the coil cord and guide the cord around the
fork arms as the telescope slews. It's somewhat of a hassle having to do
this but it could save your coil cord and some internal electronics if it
was to pull out of the plastic RJ45 connector and short out. See, what they
do with all the electronic parts these days is fill them with magic smoke.
The trick is to keep the magic smoke inside the electrical components! As
you probably know, once the smoke gets out, nothing works anymore.
