While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Kyle, I found my post for the spectroscope. What I forgot to mention
about the "0" and "1st" orders are the bending that occurs from the
combination of the lines of prisms, and the blase angle. The problem
with a grating like this is you must remove it every time you wish to do
normal stuff, and add it right dead in front of the CCD, like the IR
filter goes on the Meade Pictor cameras. If it is, say put on a filter
wheel, you will see order "0" your target, say a star, and the 1 st
order your starting spectra will be to the right out of the FOV. Thus
the grism wedge to bend the light so your spectra still comes through
with the target, "0" order. At best no more than 100 lines /mm will be
good for 30 to 35 mm distance from the CCD chip. This is mostly true
with a SCT. So a good cheap grating, that can be found as I mentioned
from France, Juelin, and also from Optometerics and some others for well
under $100. $38 as I mentioned with shipping. Plus you never, I mean
never touch a grating, or try to clean it except with very clean bowing
air. The grating you asked about can get minor dust in it, thus very
hard to clean. Others can easily be adapted to any filter wheel, with
protection. The trick to that is to cut the 1.25 ep tube down as much as
you can so it still can be tightened down with the set thumb screw, but
puts the CCD with in a good range to the grating. Hope this helps. Its
fun and very simple, once you learn some of the in and outs to do some
very easy science and have some fun as well. To me it makes the SCT a
very nice tool. BTW, My wife heard this evening, that we will be getting
about 100K more from the will than we expected, so looks like the Meade
16" SCT OTA soon. Mike
