a bit more....

I should have added that after adding the diodes the output voltage ranged
from 17 V under full load to 18.5V under minimal load. There are
effectively two diodes in series, producing a drop of about 1.4V total (in
a bridge rectifier circuit, only two of the four diodes conduct at any time).
