Hey, Reb!

Be nice now! the biggest one got booted out not so long ago. Check out the
outdoor American Folklife Festival while you're there, but don't plan on buying
any 'scope goodies in D.C. There's so much light pollution, most of the
populace doesn't know there's a sky at night.

I've lived in the DC area for more than ten years and have exhausted all
efforts to find a good shop. "T'aint none!" You'd think that the Nation's
Capitol would, wouldn't you?! What with the Smithsonian and the Naval
Observatory almost within walking distance of each other. But.... no!

IF you want to buy astrogoodies, you'll have to go up to Maryland. We have a
seriously professional shop, Company Seven, whose proprietor will regale you
with stories of how he single-handedly saved the FBI's bacon, but he won't sell
you Meade products "because they aren't good enough for his standards."
[Actually, it's a great shop if you have time to browse and have lots of money.
Take a look around http://www.companyseven.com/
and if you decide to go out there, here's the map:
http://www.companyseven.com/astroreq/maps.html

If you want a more down-to-earth place with a good variety of stuff and more
reasonable prices, try Gary Hand at Hands On Optics in Damascus, MD. (See
http://www.handsonoptics.com/ and use these directions to get there:
http://www.handsonoptics.com/opening/opening.html .)

By the way, neither of these shops are open on Sundays.

If anyone knows of others, I'D like to hear about them, myself. I live in
Virginia and both are more than an hour away, so I've had to be satisfied with
the Internet (most of my stuff is used from Astromart) and an occasional (yes,
I know, "Boo, hiss!") trip to Natural Wonders (currently having a going out of
business sale--10-80% off) or the Discovery Channel Store, but their selections
are limited and their knowledgeable staff even more so.

Good luck and clear skies!
Bob Garrett
