OK, here's one for you planetary photographers: I find that the range
of brightness values on the Moon is much less than the full range of 8
bits per pixel: when I take a lunar shot with the exposure about right I
get a histogram that has values spanning less than half of the range
(plus a big spike at pure black, of course, if the sky behind the limb
is in the frame). So the question is: should I set the exposure so that
the peak of the histogram is in the center of the range, so that the
brightest areas are nearly pure white, or what? It would seem that
setting it so that the darkest tones are just barely above pure black
would result in the fastest exposure and therefore the least likelihood
of atmospheric interference.
