While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Sorry for the late reply on this, but I was away observing at Cherry Springs
State Park, PA over the weekend. A great dark sky site!

Anyway, I've been using the HP S20 photo scanner for about six months and am
quite pleased with it. It was about $500 (direct from HP). It's resolution
for negatives and slides is 2400 dpi. This is not a flatbed scanner - it was
designed expressly to scan negatives, slides and prints up to about 5 x 7
inches. It has a USB interface. The only problem I've had with it is that it
sometimes does not pull a negative strip all the way in by itself - then I
have to put the strip in from the opposite direction to get all the frames
scanned.

It has a number of software controls for working with brightness, contrast,
color, sharpness, etc. When I shoot a roll of 35mm film, I just take the
film to a local 1-hour photo place and tell them "no prints, don't cut the
negative". This is really cheap, they only charge about $1.50 per roll since
they don't have to print any photos. Then I take the developed film strip
home, cut it myself, and scan it into the S20 scanner. After that the photos
are digitized and you can do just about anything you want with them on the
PC.

Short of having your own darkroom (or CCD), this is the best way to go,
IMHO.

Clear skies,
Kevin Wigell
