I always lock the DEC when setting up my scope and haven't had any problems.
I suggest that you consider buying a ScopeSaver table for your 10". This
makes setting up the scope to the tripod much easier. If you don't know
much about the ScopeSaver, go to http://www.cloudynights.com When you get
there, select "Accessories", then scroll down to ScopeSaver.
