Who knows what their reasoning was. They did get a lot of flaming at
one point. Of course, most (but not all!) of the flames were
undeserved. But that's part of life in the big city. I would have
thought they would have learned to deal with it.

Perhaps. But it serves little purpose to convert an email complaint
into a phone one. Maybe they figured that many of those who would use
email would not use the phone. If so, that's a pretty rotten customer
service philosophy.
I'm sure someone inside Meade said at some point, "If we improved the
quality of the product we would get fewer complaints." But I guess he
lost the argument :-(
