Right on John!!
I agree with you completely that this is very likely to be the problem.
My 10 inch LX200 consistently hits the target within 2 arc minutes and I
leave it on high speed all the time. (Incidentally, it is permanently mounted
and I use a single star alignment!) I was about to make the same comments
when I saw your response.
I have seen the same symptom in our clubs 25 inch telescope when the
encoder bulbs were given too low bias current. The pulses had time to get low
enough to be counted at low speed but at high speed, the slow response made
it miss some pulses. The scope would overshoot erratically. Putting a scope
on the sensors showed the problem at high speed as a lifting of the "zero"
level.
The LX200 is capable of placing an object on my ST. 9 90$ of the time,
so visual is a snap.
I would have the RA sensor alignment and levels checked. Return it if
necessary.
