While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Adi,

Actually realigning the OTA is quite simple. I've seen 3 articles describing 3
different ways to do it with 2 being really simple and the 3rd more
complicated. The one I found easist goes as follows:

1.) Accurately level the scope in AltAz mode (leveling is critical here).
2.) Place the OTA in the straight up position with declination at 90 degrees.
3.) Verify that the OTA is at exactly 90 degrees by placing a level on the top
of the OTA (across the corrector plate face) perpendicular to the dec axis of
rotation. In other words as you move the OTA in declination the level moves up
and down. If the OTA is not level then use the dec fine adjust to precisely
level the OTA. Change the dec setting circle to indicate the correct 90 degree
setting.
4.) Now rotate the level 90 degrees so that it runs from each side of the fork
mount along the corrector plate face. If it's not level in this direction then
the OTA alignment is off and you need to adjust the alignment of the OTA until
it's level by the screws at the bottom of the OTA(I'll let you read up on
that).
5.) If you so desire you can verify that you've achieved an accurate alignment
by shining a laser pointer at an angle onto the corrector plate and observing
the reflection on a wall/ceiling as you rotate the RA axis. Ideally, the
reflection will not move (1" is probably typical depending on the distance of
the wall).

Good luck,
John
