While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Ben, for visual use you are correct - there is not a lot of use for the
High Precision (HP) mode , but it will help someone who is having problems
getting aligned correctly as the star it points to before making the last
little jump to the object is always visible in a telrad and can help someone
new actually get to see something.

The real benefit of the HP mode is when doing astrophotography with a CCD
where the field of view is 'significantly' less than most eyepieces, and the
objects you are shooting may not even be visible to the eye. That last
little correction of being able to re-center the HP star before it make the
small jump to finally goto the object is a real keeper for the peace of mind
knowing that your tiny little 15th mag galaxy you are shooting with your 8"
scope is going to be on the final image.

While definitely not nearly as important (if even needed at all) with a
permanently mounted scope (even with a CCD), it is especially handy when you
are working with a portable mount where your alignment can be slightly
different every time you set up. Yes you can shoot short exposures and see
if something faint turns up, or shoot a test exposure and do a starfield
match, but once you are used to the HP mode, and are confident in the
abilities of the machine, it's a no-brainer...

Click click whirrrrr beep click whirrrr shoot!
