While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Anything with DEET in it seems to work well. Comes in different strengths
depending on your need (25%, 39%, 100% etc). I use it in spray form.
However, as with most repellants, DO NOT (as you already mentioned) apply
the spray style near scopes, or anything that you want to keep in good
ocondition. I lost a watch that way and clouded my cellular phone cover
also - this stuff loves to eat plastic. I would imagine (<<shudder>>) that
it would do similar things to the mirror coatings and OTA Paint.

Get the liquid/lotion/cream style so you can reapply near the scope if you
sweat alot or are in a heavily infested area. Also, limit what you put on
your face (near eyes) and hands as they will be coming in contact with
eyepieces and such.
