While I have nothing more than a hunch to go on, I would be very suspicious of the encoder output from the DEC motor. I seem to recall that the DC bias adjustment is very touchy. And if it is not set right, the encoder output could fall below the switching threshold of the logic that it feeds at fast slew speeds. My guess is that at faster slew speeds, the encoder may not output the pulses correctly and the computer might think the motor has stopped or slowed.
When you panned and scanned, was that perhaps at a slower slew speed than the full bore GOTO speed?
Again, just a hunch. I have always wondered if the vast majority of DEC problems are related to the encoders.
