Sorry...I cannot resist contributing to this fun. The solution to the equator question is simple: go a couple of steps South or North and your doubt will disappear. (:-)

Good question Doug. In fact it reinforces my theory that - from a mechanical
perspective - living on the North or South pole is definitely preferable.
Seriously though, there's a chap in Malaysia (recently posted some photos
here - or maybe SBIG, can't remember) who being at about 3 degrees north has
that issue to contend with. From memory he uses a [modified?] Milburn, and
has produced some nice long exposure astro photos.
