Hi Ralph,
Last weekend I used Polaris and Arcturus,
this never quite worked either, mind you it was closer. When I did the alignment between Polaris and Alkaid (as a result of Polaris/Arcturus not quite working out), the alignment was good. Slewing from star 19 (Polaris) to star 140 (Alkaid) went well as I expected it to.
The problem was starhopping using the goto from star 140 (alkaid) to star 147 (Arcturus).
I am sure that I have read in the archives a while back that some stars work better than others and some just dot seem to work at all, could it be that I have picked a duff star to start with possibly?
I am very careful to level the tripod and
use a level on top of the OTA to ensure its level and checking the setting circles all before start up. I use magnifying glass on the RA & DEC setting circles to ensure they are lined up.
I also use a GPS unit to get my precise location and time and if I have to alter the time I also re-enter the date so that the planetary data is updated.
Clear Skies,
Andy.

How about polar align with Polaris and Dubhe? or Polaris and Vega? Then=
do your test.
