Yes, it's portable, but as you noted, it's not a lightweight. I have a GEM
mounted C-14 which I routinely take to dark sky locations. While some
consider this scope to be portable, such a description is a stretch.

If you can see yourself carrying a 72 pound sack of eggs without breaking an
egg, then you will have no problem handling a 12" LX200.

There are many times more LX200's out there than any other brand. More
importantly, Meade has been selling the LX200 scope for a decade. In spite
of this, Celestron SCTs are fine instruments...in some instances are
superior to the Meade.

While I haven't used one yet, the Celestron GPS model appears very
promising.
