While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

How about star charts for dark objects? and you can use an eyepatch to
isolate one eye. I think you are in for a pleasant surprise. The difference,
in my experience, is not subtle. And use red and green LED's which can be
dimmed, not plastic filters on a flashlight. YMMV :)
