They are used for GOTO purposes or 'sync'ing purposes just like any other
object in the database. Some people use the SAO designations, some like the
names better, etc. Just preference really. I can understand the question
because I suppose most folks don't ever have the need to use them, so never
even know (or care) about the SAO designation.
The best use I have found so far is that many of the double stars I look at
are referenced by their SAO numbers which makes it very easy to find them
with an LX200 instead of trying to find some sort of cross-reference of SAO
to common name or SAO to Greek designation. Occultation of stars by
asteroids as listed in S&T every month also shows them by SAO number.
