Several uses:

1. They provide a denser set of objects on which to sync and improve pointing accuracy.

2. If you have a finder chart for an object like an asteroid or comet, there will frequently be an SAO start close so you can slew to that and then find the object.

3. Many favorite double stars have SAO numbers, providing a way to slew to them.
