Tony,
Boy, do I owe you an apology!! And--my grateful thanks!!
Here in the UK, we pay by the minute for our phones. In the past year, we
have had a number of internet service providers who have offered 800
"freecall numbers--at a cost--to internet surfers. I paid the US
equivalent of about $150 as an annual fee for one, and the service has
become worse and worse. They were "down for the entire month of August
into the 2d week of Sept. I finally got fed up and changed to another one
that to date seems tremendous (crossed fingers). Trouble is that in the
process I started getting double messages as I couldn't get on-line with my
prior service to unsubscribe from mapug, sbig and several others. Your
message got lost in the shuffle of probably 1,600 to 1,800 messages. At
any rate, started clearing out this evening and came across yours, and I'm
really ashamed. I'm sure you must think me a real schmuck to have made me
such a generous offer and then I never responded to it. I sincerely hang
my head in shame.
As to your most generous offer--I'm actually OK, I think Tony. Thank you
so very, very much.
I have a good 150' RS232 connection to the scope, but am afraid I waisted a
bunch of money on a 150' serial cable for my ST-8/CFW-8/AO-7 that
communicates with my PC, but which can't carry the picture data over that
distance.
I put in a permanent pier for the scope a little over a year ago and have
been continually uncomfortable with it living under a desert storm bag
since. Indeed, I was burgled to the tune of about $4,500 in portable power
woodworking tools in early December last year. I suppose I had $20,000 or
so in scope, ccd camera, Optec focusser, computer, etc., etc., sitting a
short distance away, but it was untouched. I was damn lucky, although as
the cops said, they wouldn't be easy items to get rid of over here--which
of course is why the burgalrs weren't interested. They were looking for
tools which could easily be dumped in the run-up to Christmas.
I have about 3 acres of garden, and just the shiny tip of the scope's
desert storm bag is visible from the house. I check it from my living room
window every morning I wake up. Finally, after all this time, I'm going
over to the next village tomorrow to put down the cash down to have a guy
start fabricating a roll-off structure for me, so hopefully will have it
soon enclosed. At that point, I need to lay buried conduit--and try to
find a solution to run a serial cable over the 150' distance. I really
have hopes of a 20" RC over the next year or, though some tell me I'm crazy
to even think of investing that kind of money for such an instrument in
this sodden climate of ours. I'm originally from Colorado, and always
intended to retire in NM--but here I am and have been for 19 years now, and
even now possess British citizenship. Of course I haven't, and never would
give up citizenship in my beloved America. Nonetheless, I harbor dreams of
moving to the south of France to drier, better skies. With EU citizenship,
I can of course now live anywhere in the EU I wish.
Well, far more detail than I'm sure you wished ever to hear.
I just want to say thanks again--and apologize for the failure to respond
in a timely manner!
Warmest regards,
Bob Genung
