Meade indeed ships them in the box, and they're fine to use if you're
personally taking care of the box in your house (above floodline), carrying
it in your car or whatever. But I wouldn't like to see what the box looks
like after being shipped a few times by UPS or an airline, or left in the
back of a pickup truck when it is raining. Even one "standard airline fall"
of 8 feet onto concrete will be trouble. Not that I'd like to guess what
condition an LX200 would be in even in a container approved for that
fall...but at least it would be intact with the scope still inside it.
The military cases can even be used to carry the scope in water-tight comfort
on the roof of your car, although nobody has had the nerve to do this yet
that I know of. It's also cheap insurance for anyone whose basement might
flood with the scope there.
