I'll bet the problem is in your PC adapter. Mine (AST) says:
WARNING:
This apparatus must be earthed.
I used to get data drops over RS232 and a "buzz" when lightly touching
the tripod. Solved by connecting the grounding tab on a 3-prong plug for
the PC adapter both to the tripod spider with an alligator clip and to a
copper pipe pounded into the ground.
