Someone on MAPUG posted a reply to a person who recommended using the LX200 "right out of
the box" without using such things as hammers, pliers, blow-torches etc. (Blow torches is
not too far fetched, as I have read here that a propane torch is necessary to losen two
screws in the Dec. housing in order to do a "Decectomy" or something like that).
I agree with the poster, whoever he or she was, after spending $3,195 plus S/H for a 10"
LX200 one should expect to be able to use it for "normal" operations without having to
change the Dec bearings, re-align the fork arms, adjust the RA slow motion cam, re-grease
the focuser mechinism, re-tighten the tripod nuts, buy an extened "all-thread" tripod lock,
re-grind the tripod spreader etc.
Don't get me wrong, the excellent suggestions presented by the members of MAPUG and Doc. G's
fantastic web site are a beautifull service to the "serious amature", but I think that a
"newby" brousing this site for information on buying a Meade product or not might get the
wrong impression as to the quality of Meade products.
If we want to further the Meade reputation for manufacturing "acceptable" products at a
reasonable price, then we should refrain from critizing their equipment. (FYI, I don't work
for Meade or any of their affilliates).
that.
Oh, by the way, the above poster got the the "flame" ---- I bet you polish your virgin
LX200 tripod legs ----
Let me tell you that I have tweaked my LX200 in many ways and can now get very nice CCD
images. The one thing I want to say is that I have polished my tripod legs with a German
polishing compound called "Winel", they really gleem. As a physicist I can tell you that I
would never touch a precision piece of scientific equipment, like the LX200, without
surgical gloves on. I want to keep my LX200 in "pristine" condition, no fingerprints etc.
on the OTA.
Thank you
