Clark,
Not having to cover the scope during dark frames is supposed to be a selling
point of a camera with a mechanical shutter. I was initially curious about
this myself, so I did some tests. Inside, with the camera pointed at a
light fixture on the ceiling, I did a 10 minute dark frame without any kind
of cover. I then repeated with an opaque film canister pushed over the nose
piece. Results: the dark frames were identical. I never cover the 'scope
to do dark frames.
