It is just a matter of practice. The method I use is to first place the
tripod down so that when the scope is mounted it will be in the correct
n/s orientation. I have all the legs set in their shortest position.
Then I walk around the tripod kicking each leg until it is straight out
from the center. I do this kicking probably 3-4 times on each leg until
they all look like they are coming straight from the center. At this
point the tripod is not level but is ready to receive the scope and
bolt. Attach the scope and then level it. Although you can level the
tripod before you mount the scope it makes it harder to get the bolt in
the correct orientation ot go into the telescope base.
