While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

<P>Here's what I do to simplify setting up the tripod and scope.&nbsp; I went down and bought a 1/2-13 wing nut and a half inch I.D. washer.&nbsp; I then set up the tripod and thread the wing nut and washer onto the threaded rod that sticks up through the tripod base.&nbsp; As I'm tightening the wing nut, it's easy to adjust the tripod&nbsp;legs so the spreader correctly contacts the legs at all three points.&nbsp; After everything is relatively tight, I then place a plastic "T" level&nbsp; on the base and level the tripod by adjusting the legs as necessary.&nbsp; Once level, I loosen the wing nut and remove it and the washer.&nbsp; I then place the scope on the tripod and tighten the bolt onto the base with ease.&nbsp; Everything now fits nicely and is pretty darn level, providing you don't bump the tripod too hard when placing the scope on it.&nbsp; It's much easier to fiddle with the tripod without the scope's weight on it.&nbsp; I don't use the "springy thingy".&nbsp; I removed the "c" clip from the thr
aded rod and just keep the rod and spreader bar&nbsp;loose when not on the scope.&nbsp;<BR><BR><BR>Rick Wisniewski </P></DIV>Vancouver, WA

<DIV></DIV>&gt;
<DIV></DIV>&gt;After my frustrating experience with my tripod this weekend, I was wondering
<DIV></DIV>&gt;if anyone out there had any ideas to replace the bottom spreader with
<DIV></DIV>&gt;something sturdier...rigid...etc. I have the tripod that goes with the 12"
<DIV></DIV>&gt;LX200 scope. I spent about 30 minutes, had a friend there and everything,
<DIV></DIV>&gt;only to find out that because I didn't check to make sure that the legs were
<DIV></DIV>&gt;equidistant from each other, that it forced the threaded rod to press
<DIV></DIV>&gt;against the side of the hole in the tripod head. Also, it would be nice to
<DIV></DIV>&gt;be able to put the battery pack I have underneath there to keep people from
<DIV></DIV>&gt;getting tripped up in the wires.
