Thanks for the info! Sounds like a good idea to level with it tight and
fully spread.

Here's what I do to simplify setting up the tripod and scope. I went down
and bought a 1/2-13 wing nut and a half inch I.D. washer. I then set up the
tripod and thread the wing nut and washer onto the threaded rod that sticks
up through the tripod base. As I'm tightening the wing nut, it's easy to
adjust the tripod legs so the spreader correctly contacts the legs at all
three points. After everything is relatively tight, I then place a plastic
"T" level on the base and level the tripod by adjusting the legs as
necessary. Once level, I loosen the wing nut and remove it and the washer.
I then place the scope on the tripod and tighten the bolt onto the base with
ease. Everything now fits nicely and is pretty darn level, providing you
don't bump the tripod too hard when placing the scope on it. It's much
easier to fiddle with the tripod without the scope's weight on it. I don't
use the "springy thingy". I removed the "c" clip from the threaded rod and
just keep the rod and spreader bar loose when not on the scope.
