For what it's worth, I have used automotive transmission fluid to =
preserve the surfaces of highly polished automotive parts such as =
crankshafts, main bearings and the like. One application will inhibit =
rust from forming for a four month period. I have used this method for =
years on automotive parts stored in my garage all year-round. If your =
tripod is made of polished steel, then it is safe to use but do not =
apply it to painted surfaces. However, I have no experience with chromed =
surfaces and therefore can not recommend this application.=20
