While you're here, how about checking out the
Astronomy Book
List ? |

<< I agree! Astronomy to me is about learning about
what's out there and not just knowing how it all
happens to be oriented in the sky. I do enjoy finding
difficult DSOs but I enjoy looking at them much more!
I don't think it's necessary to have every single
constellation memorized but I do think its important
to understand "how the sky works" and be able to find
things if given a star chart. Personally, I would
much rather use the time required to manually find
faint fuzzies to actually look at them or image them
or best of all read about them. Then again I've
considered myself a "textbook astronomer" for many
years and only became an "observational astronomer"
within the last couple years so several years ago I
could probably tell someone a fair amount about a
quasar or black hole but finding anything other than
the Big Dipper would have proven impossible :)

I usually stay well away from this kind of discussion because it can really
develop into flames, but in this case, I'll make an exception. In my own
case, I do what I do in the way that I do it, for one reason. It's my hobby
and I enjoy doing it the way that I do it! I generally feel that any
explaination beyond that point... welll.... it's nobody's business. No
explainations or defenses of the way I do it or what I do, while doing
it...... so long as it's legal. <G>
For what it's worth.
