While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Hi,

I just wonder how detrimental it is to lift the 12" with locked RA and DE.
I assume that during transport heavy knocks might be applied to the LX in transit, comparable to blows with a hammer. This will cause a momentary heavy strain on the axes and gears if they were locked.
How large are the forces on these gears by lifting the scope? Nearly zero, I would say. Unless you knock or drop the scope, these forces (torque actually) will be far less than when you try to remove the cover lid on any observing evening. Do you loose RA and DE then?

PS the second time I moved the scope (12" as well) from the tripod, I did it by myself alone using the adequate fork handles. I am older than most of you and have a back problem... It is feasible. But one has to prepare an action plan before lifting the scope.

do not take out of the case with the thing locked... and do not lift it for
the first time by yourself... there is more chance of damage to the scope
and to yourself.. believe me , i am a big guy, and i still dont lift it by
myself,..
