Don't know if this is the stuff (I am in the UK), but I used the aluminium
rails from 'Flexlink Systems Ltd'. These are a sectional aluminium system,
designed for all sorts of jobs. The commonest application is holding lab
equipment together on the bench. The stuff is sold by laboratory supply
companies, as well as businesses supplying schools. There is also a
similar system made by Bosch for the same job. There are about a hundred
different 'components', ranging from slide assemblies (with precision
roller bearings), to simple 'rails'. The rails are also available with
interlocking parts (as you describe). The normal description is 'aluminium
structural systems', or 'mechanical strut profiles'.

Best Wishes
