Yes I think using AC will be a good test.
My understanding of voltage and current draw (amperage) is that as the
source voltage drops the current draw will increase.
The ammeter measures the current draw.
As your marine battery ages its ability to charge to any given voltage
decreases and so the lx200 drive circuits will register a higher current
draw.
At least that's what I think
