While you're here, how about checking out the
Astronomy Book
List ? |
Kathy I don't know if I am reading you right, but I think you are going to
be like the proverbial dog chasing its tail the way you are going. If you
sync on a star and then physically shift your polar axis it should be no
surprise to find that guide star has 'moved' because your scope has moved.
If you are going to use the drift method to align a pier mounted scope try
doing it the way the book says; it works fine. Mine was done by the book
and I can't see the pole star......either of them! Once you have a rough
line up on the pole, select a star about mag 3.5 or brighter which is close
to 0deg dec and close to the meridian(as high above the horizon as it is
going to get. Centre that in the cross hairs, don't sync it just track it.
note the drift (north or south) when you know which drift direction it is
going adjust the polar axis up or down as required. TIP. 1. arrange your
cross hairs so that they follow north - south and east - west ; that makes
thing a lot easier believe me. 2. adjust the wedge to bring the star
back to centre....don't use your keypad at all.
When you get bored with this because there is little or no movement anymore
go hunting for a brightish star also around 0deg dec, but about 15deg or so
above your eastern horizon. Track it till you see the star start to wander
of track and bring it back on to centre using the sideways adjustment. It
takes a bit of practice but it works that way. And once you get it right
you will only have to train your drive for PEC.
