While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

It's a surface mounted 8 pin chip with a similar one,4936, controlling the
opposite direction of AZ.

It may be a common garden variety IC that has been manufactured and packaged
for Meade. I can not find any info on either of those numbers so as others
have suggested, you might be better off sending the cooked board back to
Meade and let them re pack it with smoke. Seriously though you might get it
replaced under warranty, if not well you could keep the cooked board for
future spares.
