If I understand your description, it sounds like there's a spacer ring
between the lens elements, which is very common. As long as it's oriented
properly (ie, not turned sideways so it blocks the view), then it's OK,
except you might want to tighten things up to keep it from rattling. Often,
a retaining ring will come loose a little bit and allow the parts inside to
move around. It's not really a problem as long as it's only a little loose.
Tightening a retaining ring is easy, but you have to be careful to not
scratch a lens. It helps to have the proper tool (do a google search on
"spanner wrench", or "optical spanner wrench"), but I used to use small
screwdrivers for this before I had a spanner wrench. Hold the EP upside
down and unscrew the barrel. On top of the first lens (as viewed upside
down) there should be a metal retaining ring holding the lens in place. The
ring should be threaded on the outside (although you may not be able to see
that), and should have two notches cut into it that the spanner wrench fits
into. Then you just turn it to tighten it.
