Does that mean that you had problems with binding at 90° even in this
maneuver?

This screw is usually buried deep in the hole, so you may need to check
again to see if it's really missing.
For replacements for small parts, avoid the huge home improvement stores.
Places like Ace Hardware have a much better assortment, and you don't have
to buy everything by the dozen.
