Doc G has a writeup on his web page about various focusing
techniques. I personally the Tak focusing microscope,
although the article's author preferred knife edge IIRC.

Subject: [M]: Magnifier for SLR
I have a Pentax ME SLR camera using on 12" LX200 classic. A difficulty
I have is focusing the image precisely enough for consistent images.
The ground glass screen is the original that came with the camera. I've
explored getting a screen more suitable for astro imaging, but have
concluded they are no longer available for this camera. I certainly
would appreciate any insight you all may have if a different screen is
available.
I've thought if I can magnify the image on the ground glass screen,
perhaps may help in the focusing. This is where I've hit a wall.
Nothing I have laying around, single lens, EP's, 10x eye loops, come
close to forming a magnified image. Can anyone suggest what I need to
do this? Please don't suggest I get a different camera, I already know
this is a solution, just don't wnat to afford a new camera right now.
