While you're here, how about checking out the Astronomy Book List ?

Yes. I bought a red laser for around $12 in Fry's Electronics and a green one that cost over $100 from Scope City in San Francisco. They are both the same power output (5mW IIRC). The red laser is completely invisible when used as a star pointer and would be useless in that application. The green one makes a line that (although feint) you can easily follow up into the sky. I have no idea why there is so much difference between red & green light, and I was initially sceptical given the price difference. However, having done a side-by-side comparison, the difference between red & green is very significant. IMO, If you want a star pointer, you need a green laser. YMMV.

I have a red laser that I use for collimation. The green one seems to be the color of choice for pointing out stars to people. There's a tremendous difference in price. Is the green one that much better?
